First Graders From Mars: Horus's Horrible Day
Published in School & Library Binding by Scholastic (August, 2001)
Authors: Shana Corey and Mark Teague
Average review score:

Very Funny from Patrick age 8
I think this is a funny book. The aliens fly around in cups and have tenacles and all sorts of alien stuff that makes it fun to read. It's funny that they are aliens going to school. I hope she writes a Second Graders from Mars. And then Third Graders from Mars.

First Grade, Martian Style.....
Horus couldn't wait to get to his first grade class in Pod 1. But once there, he was confused. Where was the slime table and the snooze mats and what time was snack? "First graders are too big for those things," another student informs him and Horus realizes he's not in martiangarten anymore. First grade is work, work, work, from reading to art to math problems and Horus is hungry and tired and cranky when his mother picks him up from school. How was your first day, she wants to know. "Horrible. I'm not going back!" Unfortunately, he finds out that this decision is out of his hands (or in his case tentacles), when his folks literally drag him back to school the next morning. There he finds a new little alien crying big blue tears. She's afraid school will be terrible, Horus agrees and scary, no argument there, and the teacher will be mean and the work too hard. But as Horus remembers his first day he tells her, the teacher was very nice and helpful and the work is hard, but not too hard, you can do it. Horus has a new friend, a friend who feels just like he did yesterday and needs him to help show her the ropes. So together they march inside, ready for whatever comes their way..... Shana Corey has written a delightful and humorous story that many first graders will relate to. Her simple and realistic text, complete with silly Martian language, really captures the essence of a little one moving from the safe world of kindergarten to the big unknown of first grade and is complemented by Mark Teaque's funny, expressive, colorful artwork. Together they've authored a charming story with a gentle, reassuring message that won't be lost on young readers. Perfect for kids 5-8, First Graders From Mars is just right for beginning readers and also makes a wonderful read aloud story the entire family can enjoy.

Good, Wholesome, Martian Fun!!! and WEIRD!
First Graders From Mars is a super book for kids ages 4-8. It will become a staple for parents sending kids off to first grade and for first grade teachers welcoming Kindergarten graduates for the first time (Martiangarten Grads too!). Horus is a character who kids will quickly fall for...he's a kid through an through! Corey has crafted a fast-paced, easy-to-read story that gels!! It has lots of cool stuff (from a Martian girl who cries big blue tear drops out of her NOSE to a teacher who floats, has eyes in the back of her head, front, and SIDE!!!). Teague is a master and has brought the story to alien-life with bright, bold, alive illustrations. Watch this series ZOOOOOM up the bestseller lists!! Wow!!!! :)

Flying Blind: A Memoir of Biplane Flying over Waziristan in the Last Days of British Rule in India
Published in Hardcover by Yucca Tree Pr (01 June, 2000)
Author: Geoffrey Morley-Mower

Fascinating!
Great heroic story! Fascinating records of army and air operations over the treacherous terrain of the Afghan border. Shortly after the war, a pilot fights to keep his flying carrer with his appeals to King George VI! Does he win his? I'll save that for you!

Highly recommended reading for aviation history enthusiasts.
This account of army and air operations over the Afghan border in the last days of British rule in India will intrigue a wide audience, from those interested in books on early plane and biplane flight to readers of military accounts. The author joined the Royal Air Force as a pilot in 1937, two years before World War II: his experiences in an antique plane provides a fine account of his adventures and close encounters.

Absolutely Top-Drawer, and Richer for the Re-Reading!
I could not put this book down. What I found remarkable about FLYING BLIND is that Geoffrey Morley-Mower has already written one of the most engaging and insightful memoirs of any veteran of the Second World War, MESSERSCHMITT ROULETTE. Yet FLYING BLIND is, in many ways, an even more satisfying book. Here, in the second volume of his memoirs, we meet the man and the pilot on the cusp of living his dream: flying for the RAF on the distant edge of the British Raj. Morley-Mower's self-deprecatory wit, his elegant and understated prose, and his gift for narrative sustain FLYING BLIND with a verve rarely found in fiction, much less in military biographies. The men who fought the good fight in the Second World War are fading from us, but this book reminds us of their honor, valor, and above all, their humanity, in ways that few other books have. Geoffrey Morley-Mower's second volume of his memoirs, like the first, is reminiscent of William Manchester's outstanding remembrance of serving in the U.S. Marine infantry in the Second World War, GOODBYE DARKNESS. Like Manchester, Morley-Mower has no room for bombast and plenty of room for reflective, highly-charged prose. FLYING BLIND is a must-read for anyone interested in great writing. For military scholars, it is a jewel, as so few of the iron-backboned RAF heroes are still alive. Thank God Geoffrey Morley-Mower wrote this book, bless him. And, as Hemingway once said, good books never suffer in the re-reading. FLYING BLIND is richer in the re-reading. Enjoy.

Follow Carl!

Yeah for Carl!
Follow Carl is a wonderful book for all fans of this special Rottweiler. He takes his charges through a fun filled day in the park. The colorful illustrations encourage the reader to embellish the story and truly have fun with this book. As the owner of two Rottweilers, all the Carl books are in my son's library! Three cheers for Carl!

Carl is the leader and the children love to follow!
Having all of the "Carl" books I thought perhaps Ms. Day would run out of "things" for Carl to do. Not so. Carl has plenty to do, so much that everyone ends up napping--some of the children are positioned like little puppies. Carl, of course, is his usual self. Very entertaining.

One of Ms. Day's excellent, enchanting Carl books.
As usual, Ms. Day has captured the essence of Carl and the childrens' escapades. Anyone who enjoys children and dogs (especially Rottweilers)will appreciate the accuracy of both the stories, the story line, the poses, and the facial expressions of all the characters.

One of the many enjoyable Carl books.

Four Day Planet and Lone Star Planet
Published in Paperback by Ace Books (September, 1984)
Author: H. Beam Piper
Average review score:

Absolutely great!
This exciting book is really two novellas published as one, fat paperback book! The first story is Four Day Planet, which is set in Piper's Terro-Human Future History. Fenris is an unusual world; one that's year is about the same as Earth's, but it only has four days per year! With blazing hot days and nights that are colder than cold, it is a world of tough individuals who don't like being cheated. Well, they are being cheated, and as Walter Boyd, star reported for the Port Sandor Times, watches, the whole world prepares to go up in flames.

The second story stands alone, which is to say that is it is not in Piper's Terro-Human Future History or Paratime milieus. New Texas was founded when the whole ornery state of Texas built themselves spaceships and headed out to the new frontier - space. But now, these rugged and independent New Texans are the target of an expansive race of extraterrestrials, and it's up to the Solar League's ambassador to guide them back into Earth's embrace. Well, mister, it's going to take one tough and wily ambassador to steer the New Texans - but is Stephen Silk that tough and that wily?

These two stories are absolutely great! H. Beam Piper (1904-64) is one of the little recognized greats of science fiction. He was an expert at creating fascinating worlds that were both fantastic and yet utterly believable, and these stories show his writing ability off to great effect. If you like good sci-fi, then you will like this book. If you are a fan of H. Beam Piper, then it is a must-have!

One book, Two great stories
Have you ever considered the role of government in our lives? In Four Day Planet-Lone Star Planet H. Beam Piper does just that. In Four Day Planet, we visit the planet Fenris, a near Hell-world that turns only four times in a year, but that is not the important part. You see, the people who live there are the decendants of colonists who stayed when the company who set up the colony collapsed. Left to their own devices the struggle aginst the lawless brigands who have set themsleves as rulers.

Lone-Star Planet, ( A planet for Texas ) takes us to the world of New Texas. A lovely little planet, with a government much like our own, with one little exception, Killing a member of the government is only illegial if a jury thinks it was more than he deserved. Think about it!!! This little oddity suited New Taxans just fine until somebody killed the Solar League Ambassador now a lot of people think New Texas needs a new government. Not well know anymore H. Beam Piper was one of the finest authors of his day, and this was one of his finest works.

Vintage Piper.
Four-Day Planet is the only Piper book set on Fenris, which rotates so slowly that it only has 4 days in a year, and a sunset is 100 hours long. Fenris survives by trading tallow-wax, produced from sea monsters. The monster hunters have been ripped off for years by trading agreements, and they're not going to take it anymore...

Lone Star Planet is set on New Texas -- the whole state migrated (they took the Alamo with them, of course). Politicians on New Texas are *really* accountable to the people, as the new Federation ambassador finds out...

The Fourth Day: What the Bible and the Heavens Are Telling Us About Creation
Published in Paperback by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (October, 1986)
Author: Howard J. Van Till
Average review score:

the best theology and best science i've read so far
Like the German Green's motto " neither Right nor Left but OUT IN FRONT" this book takes on both sides of the CED debate.
and in doing so moves the whole discussion into a new higher level:
---quote---
"It is my contention that neither the scriptural nor the scientific view of the cosmos is complete in itself, despite the fact that each view contributes an essential perspective on the complete reality. Through the spectacles of scriptual exegesis, we Christians see the cosmos as Creation: we see where it stands in relationship to God the Creator, who is its Originator, Preserver, Governor, and Provider. Through the lens of scientific investigation, natural scientists are able to observe the internal affairs of the material world--its coherent properties, its lawful behavior, and its authentic history. Both views are integral parts of what I call the 'creationomic perspective,' the view of the cosmos that is gained when natural science is place in the framework of the biblical doctrine of creation." preface pg ix
---end of quote---

The take home message is simple enough:

God is Creator, Sustainer, Law-Giver, and Provider.

The best way to read the book is to xerox the chart on pg 198 and keep it at your elbow. It summarizes the entire book!!!

To Scripture you address questions of external relationships:
Status Origin Goverance Value Purpose
To Science you address questions of internal affairs:
Properties Behavior History

This in a single table is the argument of the book, but to understand the critical component: the categories of questions you need to hear the example he uses.
Holding up a piece of paper, he asks you to describe it, one voice answers GREEN, another offers SQUARE. pg 204-5 The paper is in fact, both. Is these two pieces of information contradictory, of course not, it is complementary, coming from two different viewpoints. The extend the example in a way that the author does not, to which person do you address the questions concerning shape, to which do you address questions concerning color?

The first part concerns Scripture and how to build a correct hermeneutic to interpret it by. Again he introduces a good illustration, i suspect from his years of teaching this has proven to be a good memory technic and organizing principle: good illustrations. It is the vehicle model of Scripture, pg 14ff, a caravan of vehicles carrying packages with things inside the packages, think a bunch of UPS brown vans. (looks remarkably like the compiler theory train) The vehicle is the cultural historical context as expressed in the literary genre the passage is written in. The packages are the specific story, particular symbolism in a poem, specific cultural patterns. The contents are God's message to His people, in all places, throughout all time. And from pg 83, "In either case, if we attempt to consume both the content and the packaging, we may encounter significant difficulty in chewing, swallowing, and digesting the combination. Those who want to feed on the truths of Scripture must take care to differentiate between food and packaging." The two cases to distinguish are a journalistic account of the actual events of creation(think video tape) from the primeval history account that we have in Genesis.(think metaphorical origins story- mythos)

Scientism and YEC(young earth creationists)- chapter 11, " more heat than light, the creation/evolution debate" and the real battle with unbelieving scientific naturalism as a religious doctrine. Van Till makes it clear throughout the book that the YEC position of apparent age is nothing more than bad science and bad theology, for it denies the coherence of creation. It denies that God created the universe with sufficent thought to have inside it the things it needs to build up the complexity we see around us. By more importantly it denies the value of creation as an arena for the providence of God, to operate through the use of physical means.

I finished the book with a touch of sadness. For the time, energy, and people the false debate of CED is consuming in the Christian community. While good frameworks like Van Till's are neglected for want of people to work on them. If AiG or ICR did not exist, and that energy and talent was used to advance Van Tills type of arguments the Church would be far along the way to competing with the real enemy. Scientism, the world and life view that we are nothing more than sophisticated machines, the result of mindless and random meanderings through the genetic space of living beings. This is a religious, a metaphysical battle, not scientific. For science rightfully limits itself to the things of this creation, the things we see and the forces we can theorize behind them. The YEC have diverted an enormous amount of energy into bad science, trying to fight a battle at the level of facts, denying the clear evidence for an old earth, while misinterpreting the preamble of the Great KIng of Genesis One as a scientific how-to-do book on the manufacture of us. Sadly we are all the weaker knowing that good ideas like this book have been around since 1986 and are yet to be discovered.

I hope you discover this book as a result of my review. It will well worth the time to read, and i didn't even try to tell you the gems in the astronomy section--part 2.

Committed Physicist and Christian
In college I took Howard Van Till's course in Advanced Astronomy and helped do a small amount of research that contributed to this book. In person, Van Till is one of the most committed physicists and christians that I know. He takes a substantial amount of talent, integrity and faith and spreads the light for all. The Christian world has given him mixed reviews because many of them are strict "six day" creationists, which Van Till is not. You will be hard pressed to question his physics and he shows the flaws in many simple-faith approaches. I have read dozens of books on creation and cosmology -- this is one of the best.

An excellent read
It's a shame this book is out of print. The book is divided into three parts: The first describes what the Bible tells us about Creation and the Cosmos. The second details evidences gleaned from the study of the Cosmos, in particular, astronomy. The third section offers a new perspective on the relationship between science and religion, in constrast to a traditional young-earth creationist perspective.

From Worry to Worship: A 30-Day Devotional Guide

From Worry to Worship: A 30 Day Devotional Guide
"From Worry To Worship" is a great devotional guide! Applying the simple principles Julie Morris teaches has helped me find freedom from worry and has taught me how to make every moment a moment to worship God. It was so helpful that I purchased 12 of them and gave them as gifts to friends and family. Now they are beginning to enjoy the freedom too! Thank you Julie!

A Wonderful Book That Really Works
It has been said by many theologians that worry is one of the most powerful weapons that Satan has in his arsenal. Worry, as most people know can cause innumerable problems in many areas of life. The Lord has used Julie Morris to write a book that counteracts this tool of Satan. This book, From Worry to Worship, gives explicit instructions on how to overcome worry through the worship of God through Jesus Christ and in the power and person of His Holy Spirit. Julie puts herself into the book, moving from the experience of worry into the appropriate scripture that relate it to the Lord and His Word. Then she guides us through the scripture and shows us how to relate it to the experience of worry. Then she gives us practical advice on how to apply what we've learned. I love the application part, 'do it'. The Bible states in James 1:25, "But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does." In other words the blessing is in the doing of God's Word. The blessing of being worry-free is in the doing of His Word as it relates to worry. Julie helps us to experience this great blessing from the Lord.
One of the most important things is how she teaches us how to pray about worry. Julie shares with us many of her beautiful, well-worded prayers about worry, written and prayed from her own heart to the heart of God. They serve as great tools in teaching us how to pray about our own personal problems of worry.
This book is well written in easy to understand language. It flows smoothly from one section to the other, making it easy to read and follow. The exercises in the book enable you to internalize the scripture and more easily apply them. Julie's book can be used in a number of ways. It is excellent for personal individual study, in a Sunday School class, in a Bible Study Group, in a support group, or with friends in your own home.
As a Christian for forty-eight years and a licensed, ordained Baptist Minister for thirty-four years with degrees from Baptist College of Florida, Louisiana College, and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, I recommend this book as the best that I've studied relating to the subject of worry. If studied and applied properly, The Lord will use it to set you free from the problem of worry and lead you into a life filled with praise, gratitude, and worship of HIM.
Thank you, Julie, for a masterpiece.
What a great title, FROM WORRY TO WORSHIP!

Devotional Guide with Depth
Julie Morris is an excellent writer and has a way of seeing the root of the problem. This is a very thorough devotional guide and gives many practical applications for working through your problems. Many devotional books I have used have just been a few paragraphs that have a good message and by noon I have forgotten all about it, but From Worry To Worship has much more depth.

Frommer's Ireland from $50 a Day (17th Ed.)

A great help!
I found this particular guide book to be one of the best I purchased - and I bought a few. It was very accurate and up-to-date on prices, phone numbers, attractions, hours and general information. (Although that was June '96 and I'm sure that "Frommer's Ireland on $60 a Day" is more accurate money-wise.) It really helped me to plan my vacation and I was able to see most of the places I wanted to without wasting time or money. It has a bit for everyone from the pub scene to literary interests and everything in between. I especially like how Frommer's tells you how to get the best value for your dollar but where you should splurge if you can. Hope I run into a few of you when I next go to Ireland!

The Best Book for Ireland travel
I used this book for my trip to Ireland and found it very accurate and so informative be it food/b&bs/cars-driving and tourist sights. The tips were great and the whole trip was just smooth sailing due much of this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who might be heading to the Emerald Isle.

This was the only book I needed to buy!
I bought this book, and several others, in order to prepare for my first trip to Ireland. It was the only one I should have bought!! The prices were incorrect, but inflation happens. I would highly recommend this book to anyone planning a vacation to the Emerald Isle! Don't waste you hard earned money on any other books or maps! Save it for shopping. I spent even less than the $50.00 a day, and had a wonderful time. I saved so much, that I am going back again in a few months!!

Frommer's Mexico from $35 a Day
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (November, 1996)
Authors: Marita Adair and George McDonald
Average review score:

Find this book! Buy it!
Even though the price in the book title is probably no longer applicable, the recommendations are. Especially the Tropicana Inn in San Jose del Cabo -- clean, safe, great location in downtown area. Near great shopping. Avoid the tourist trap of Cabo San Lucas -- go here! Marita Adair would never steer you wrong. We took a trip to hotels she recommended in Mexico and would go again -- our best recommendation!

Still the classic moderate budget Mexico guide!
I have purchased several editions of the Mexico on $__ A Day books, and have found them about the best for my moderate budget needs. And Marita Adair has done an excellent job of keeping the book updated; the 22nd edition may have been the best ever--certainly a classic guide! There has not been a Frommer's budget Mexico guide published since, and I have been very disappointed in the 1998 and 1999 editions of the general Frommer's Guide to Mexico--seem kind of flat with no really new information.

A very good Mexico guide for the budget-oriented traveler.
I used this guide to plan my trip to Mexico in January 1997. Overall, I was impressed with the quality of the research. It is oriented toward budget-conscious travelers, who want clean, comfortable accomodations and bargain eats. It could use some more information about the history, culture and customs of the Mexican people.

Frommer's New York City from $90 a Day 2003
Published in Paperback by Frommer (13 September, 2002)
Author: Cheryl Farr Leas
Average review score:

A New Yorker is impressed
I'm an editor at Frommer's Travel Guides, and I worked on this book; I can tell you that Cheryl Farr Leas is a thorough, dedicated REAL New Yorker, with attitude & skills. This edition of the book required a lot of new information about how transit was affected by 9/11, updated security measures, and the latest (as we went to press) about what was open, and the latest information/predictions about what is going to happen at and how to visit Ground Zero.

This is a book I've used for reference because even we New Yorkers don't know every neighborhood, every dining bargain (though we like to think we do).

When friends are coming to town, I go to this book to recommend hotels that they'll particularly like because the descriptions really give you a feel for the ambience of the place, who would be most comfortable there (and places some people WOULDN'T be comfortable in).

New York is one expensive town, and I particularly appreciate the tips for low-cost (and free) entertainment: bars with no cover charge where you can hear live music, ways to get breaks on theater tickets, a list of when some cultural institutions have free admission. It's a good book to have around even if you don't have friends coming to town!

Easy-to-use, for the perfect Economist
I just love this travel guide to New York City. Written with a spirit of discovery and frank commentaries, one can't find a better budget guide book than this. The book is categorically divided into different segments representing different activities from dining to places-of-interest. The range of choices in food, accommodation and travel hot spots will tickle your desire to go on a trip to NYC but immediately. It offers a wide array of prices and quality of products to expect in NYC: from posh Plaza Hotel that "looks like a cake sitting opposite Central Park" to the economical Sweet Hill Intl Hostel in North Mahattan; from cheap F&B to the mouth watering French cuisines; from free Staten Ferry rides to the elite class' pastime of scaling the Empire State Building - Frommer's got it all there. It's a all-in-one book with a free map and subway notes. BUY IT!

Tattoo it , pin it, handcuff yourself to it.
Very thorough, full of info on prices, how to get around, what to see and do. all guide books do that i guess, but this covered a lot of ground and didn't seem to be written just for mom and dad and the kids. it saved a lot of time and guess work and pointed me in the direction i wanted to go.

A Golfer's Day With the Master: Spiritual Wisdom from the Fairway
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (16 May, 2000)
Author: Dorothy K. Ederer
Average review score:

A Spiritual Delight
After reading Sister Dorothy's first book, 'Colors of the Spirit', she immediately became one of my favorite spirtiual authors. But when I read that she had a new book published called, 'A Golfer's Day With The Master,' I was dissapointed, thinking that she was trivilizing her remarkable talent by writing a book about a golfer's day with God. I was Wrong...Wrong...Wrong.

In my estimation, on the book jacket it should read, author Sr. Dorothy Ederer in collaboration with the Holy Spirit. I know you will also sense this as you read the beautiful prayers and reflections that are in this book. She has taken an ordinary subject, a day in the life of a golfer and made it into a spiritual treasure. This is a must read book for anyone who would like a better understanding of what can happen when one allows the Holy Spirit to abide in one's life. This book could have just as well been titled, 'One Day In Your Life With God' because it encompass's everything one needs to know about how we can relate to God in every aspect of our life.

I highly recommend this little treasure. It is a simple but profound book. My wife and I will reread it many, many times. Tom & Mary Milano

Sr. Dorothy Scores a Hole-In-One...again!
If you love golf......and your God, this is the book for you.Sr. Dorothy does a wonderful job of weaving a number of life's truestories into lessons from life. Her warmth in capturing these events truly touches one's soul. How do I know these stories are true?...well, I was one of those present for the hole-in-one story....it's all true! And yes, I was every bit as obnoxious as I appeared the book.

I think having Jack Nicklaus endorse this book tells you a great deal about its content.....and about Jack. I very highly recommend this book.

God's peace and love.....Lowell Rinker

Spirituality & Humor
Since I know Sister Dorothy personally from the time she was in Kalamazoo, MI I was delighted to see a new book by her and anxious to read it. I found it to be very enlightening and since I don't play golf I still found it to be enjoyable and relevant in my spiritual life. She opens your eyes to God with her special brand of humor and continues throughout the book to keep you turning the pages to find more ways to relate not just to a golf course but also the outdoors. I'd recommend this book for any one looking for more ways to bring spirituality into your life, along with humorous bits throught.
